Haramaya University and FAO Partner to Boost Food Security
Haramaya University has signed a cooperation agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to enhance food security in Ethiopia.
The partnership aims to leverage the university’s research expertise and contribute to improved agricultural production, nutrition, and food access within the community.
Dr. Yishak Yusuf, Vice President of Research and Community Engagement at Haramaya University, emphasized that this collaboration strengthens an existing relationship and will facilitate joint efforts to transform agricultural production into nutritious food for the community.
Maya Hajali, Head of the Better Nutrition Group and Policy Officer at FAO Ethiopia, highlighted the valuable contributions of Haramaya University’s researchers and experts. She stated that the partnership will focus on high-quality research, surveys, and assessments related to food security, including fruit production and other relevant areas.
Douglas Mkunda, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of FAO Ethiopia, emphasized the project’s focus on gathering evidence, informing policy decisions, and creating a positive impact on both private and public institutions.
Daniel Alemu, a Food Science lecturer at the Haramaya University Institute of Technology and the project coordinator, explained that the agreement will bolster the university’s efforts to improve the food system. This will involve conducting research, developing agricultural technologies and improved seeds, and increasing access to a variety of nutritious foods for the community.
The agreement signing was followed by a discussion session where researchers and experts from both institutions presented and discussed their research findings.
