Global Connectivity Key to Development, Indonesian Envoy Tells Haramaya
The Indonesian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Djibouti, and the African Union, H.E. Dr. (H.C.) Al Busyra Basnur delivered a public lecture titled “The Importance of International Connectivity in Today’s World” at Haramaya University’s Resource Center.
The lecture emphasized the crucial role of international relations and connectivity in fostering global cooperation, and economic development, and addressing shared challenges.
Ambassador Basnur emphasized the multifaceted importance of international relations for individuals, institutions, universities, and nations. He stressed the need for students to become not only citizens of their own countries but also global citizens, as this would help strengthen international ties and enhance their competitiveness in an increasingly interconnected world. Drawing a parallel between Indonesia and Ethiopia, he noted their shared experience of having diverse populations, highlighting that Indonesia has 756 indigenous languages and 1,128 distinct nations.
The Ambassador’s insightful discussion highlighted how international connectivity fosters global cooperation and promotes economic development. He emphasized the significance of cultural diplomacy, trade, and technology in creating a more interconnected world that benefits both nations and their citizens. He suggested that Haramaya University strengthen its initiatives to invite individuals with substantial international experience to share their insights.
The event sparked lively discussions on how Ethiopia, particularly the Haramaya University community, can leverage international connections to progress in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Ambassador Basnur highlighted Indonesia’s contributions to global connectivity and provided valuable insights into how countries can develop sustainable partnerships for mutual benefit.
Prof. Mengistu Urge, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Haramaya University, emphasized the importance of diplomatic engagements, asserting that the lecture highlighted how diplomacy can benefit the country. He stressed the significance of fostering relationships between countries and universities, noting that developing such forums will enhance the university community and contribute to national development.
Asad Fahmi, a colleague at Haramaya University, pointed out that strong and well-established international relations are essential for a country to withstand external influences and protect its interests, emphasizing the need to cultivate knowledgeable citizens.
Students and staff who attended the lecture expressed their admiration for Indonesia as a model for successful coexistence. They highlighted the country’s peaceful relationships and mutual respect among its diverse population as key factors contributing to its robust international relations and thriving economy. Attendees noted that this unity has played a significant role in helping Indonesia establish strong international connections and enhance its economic growth.
