Job title: Pathology Assistant Nurse
We are seeking to appoint full time Pathology Assistant Nurse for maternal and child health research projects to be based in Harar, Ethiopia. The role is to support the pathology technicians and pathologist with collection of data and to facilitate research activities within the clinical environment.
Background:
Haramaya University has formed a research collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Current research projects are focused on maternal and child health. This includes the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance network (CHAMPS, http://champshealth.org/) which is a new global health surveillance network funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed at understanding the causes of child death in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia and a research study looking into infective causes of stillbirth.
The post-holder will be responsible for working with health care workers and research staff to support and facilitate all research activities within the Pathology and MITS units. This will include providing information about the study to eligible patients in order to obtain informed consent.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Diploma in Nursing (10 +3)
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Good organization and management skills
- Evidence of basic computer skills (Microsoft office)
Desired:
- Communication skills in English
- Previous work experience in similar areas

Responsibilities
- Assist in identification and registration of samples.
- Be trained in processing samples and make them ready for reading.
- Process samples and facilitate for reading.
- Be trained on MITS assistance and conducting MITS.
- Do MITS based as assigned.
- Assist pathology technician and pathologies in specific tasks.
- Ensure all reports are recorded using appropriate sheet.
- Coordinate with the research nurse and other staff in the hospital.
- Attend meetings and prepare reports on issues related to the study.
- Attend induction training and refresher trainings if required.
- Ensure availability of study specific forms in the unit.
- Contribute to data entry and other administrative tasks as required.
- Additional duties which may be required by the study team.
