ፕሮፌሰር ተማም ሁሴን አባጨብሳ ከአባታቸው ከአቶ ሁሴን አባጨብሳ እና ከእናታቸው ከወ/ሮ በድሪያ አባጨብሳ ነሐሴ 12 ቀን 1947 ዓ.ም ጅማ ከተማ ተወለዱ፡፡ እድሜያቸው ለትምህርት እንደደረሰ በአካባቢው ባሉ ትምህርት ቤቶች የ1ኛ እና የ2ኛ ደረጃ ትምህርታቸውን አጠናቀው የመጀመሪያ ዲግሪያቸውን በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በስነ ህይወት ከተመረቁ በኋላ በሐረማያ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ሰኔ 30 ቀን 1978 ዓ.ም በመምህርነት ተቀጥረዋል፡፡

  • የሁለተኛ ዲግሪያቸውን በ(Crop Protection) በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በግብርና ኮሌጅ በ1976 ዓ.ም አጠናቀዋል፤
  • የዶክትሬት ዲግሪያቸውን በአሜሪካ በ Kansas State ዩኒቨርሲቲ በPlant Pathology በ1990 ዓ.ም አጠናቀው ወደ ሐረማያ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ተመልሰዋል፡፡

ፕሮፌሰር ተማም ሁሴን

በሐረማያ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ከተቀጠሩበት  ሰኔ 30 ቀን 1978 ዓ.ም ጀምሮ  እስከ ጥር 1 ቀን 2010 ዓ.ም ድረስ በሌክቸረርነት፣  በረዳት ፕሮፌሰርነት፣ በተባባሪ ፕሮፌሰር እና ፕሮፌሰር ደረጃ  አገልግለዋል ፡፡

በተጨማሪም  ከጥቅምት 22 ቀን 1990 ዓ.ም እስከ ሐምሌ 20 ቀን 1990 ዓ.ም በድህረ ምረቃ ት/ቤት ዲን ሆነው እንዲሁም ከሚያዝያ 17 ቀን 1992 ዓ.ም  እስከ ሰኔ 27 ቀን 1994 ዓ.ም የእፅዋት ሳይንስ ትምህርት ክፍል ኃላፊ ሆነው አገልግለዋል፡፡ በእነዚህ ጊዜያትም ኃላፊነታቸውን በብቃትና በታማኝነት  ሲወጡ ቆይተዋል፡፡

በአገር አቀፍና በዓለም ዓቀፍ የምርምር ጆርናሎች ላይ የተለያዩ የምርምር ስራዎችን ያሳተሙ ሲሆን የሰብል በሽታዎች ቁጥጥርና መከላከል ላይ ያተኮሩ የስልጠና ፅሁፎችን በማዘጋጀት ለአርሶ አደሮች እና ለግብርና ባለሙያዎች ስልጠና በመስጠት በሙያቸው አገልግሎት ሰጥተዋል፡፡ የማስተርስና የፒኤችዲ ተማሪዎችን በማስተማርና በማማከር በአገራችን የተማረ የሰው ሀይል ለማፍራት የሚደረገውን ጥረት የበኩላቸውን አስተዋጽኦ አበርክተዋል፡፡

ፕሮፌሰር ተማም ሁሴን የሁለት ሴቶች እና የአንድ ወንድ ልጅ አባት  የነበሩ ሲሆን በአደረባቸው ህመም ምክንያት በህክምና ሲረዱ ቆይተው በተወለዱ በ63 ዓመታቸው ሐምሌ 19 ቀን 2010 ዓ.ም  ከዚህ ዓለም በሞት ተለይተዋል፡፡

የቀብር ስነ-ስርዓታቸውም በተወለዱበት በጅማ ከተማ ነገ ሐምሌ 21 ቀን 2010 ዓ.ም የሚፈጸም ይሆናል፡፡

Background

The Bilateral Ethiopia Netherlands Effort for Food Income and Trade (BENEFIT) partnership is a portfolio of five programmes (ISSD Ethiopia, CASCAPE, ENTAG, SBN and REALISE), which is funded by the Government of the Kingdom of Netherlands through its Embassy in Addis Ababa. REALISE: ‘Realising Sustainable Agricultural Livelihood Security in Ethiopia’ is the new programme under BENEFIT. REALISE Programme is designed to take the achievements of CASCAPE (Capacity building for Scaling up of evidence-based best Practices in Agricultural Production’ (CASCAPE) programme and the ‘Integrated Seed Sector Development’ (ISSD) Ethiopia programme to new areas and target groups in Ethiopia.

REALISE is a three – year (2018-2020) programme that will align with the Government of Ethiopia’s (GoE) Productive Safety Net Programme (PSNP). This GoE flagship programme currently reaches 8 million chronically food insecure Ethiopians with a wide array of instruments to smooth consumption, prevent asset depletion and promote livelihood diversification including uptake of improved agricultural practices. REALISE aims to take lessons learned from the Wageningen University & Research, CASCAPE and ISSD Ethiopia programmes to PSNP target woredas.

The goal of the REALISE programme is: ‘Enhanced human, organisational and institutional capacities to adapt, validate and scale best fit practices to improve the resilience of chronically food insecure households in PSNP woredas. REALISE’s goal is to be achieved through four primary outcomes:

  1. Developed best fit practices that meet expressed needs and have the potential to contribute to increased productivity and resilience are available for scaling in selected PSNP Woredas;
  2. Increased availability, timely delivery and use of quality seed of new, improved, and/or farmer preferred varieties through diverse channels;
  3. Enhanced human, organizational and institutional capacities for matching, adapting, validating and scaling best fit practices; and
  4. A conducive environment exists for the institutionalisation of evidence-based system innovations.

The implementation model is based on the experiences of the CASCAPE and ISSD Ethiopia programmes in that REALISE will partner with the Regional Agricultural Research Institutes, Bureaus of Agriculture and Livestock Resources/food security offices and a number of Ethiopian Universities that will each manage so called clusters: Hawassa, Haramaya, Arsi, Bahir Dar, Woldia and Mekelle. There are two satellite Universities: Odabultum University that will collaborate with Haramaya University and Arbaminch University that will collaborate with Hawassa University. The REALISE programme will validate and scale best fit practices, will assure the availability of quality seed, will train related GoE and NGO partners in the proper scaling of the practices and will work with its partners towards the institutionalisation of evidence-based system innovations.

Haramaya University’s Administrative Board awards the rank of full Professorship in Agricultural Economics to Dr Jema Haji

Dr. Jema Haji Mohammed was born on 26 June 1966 at a rural village of Gololcha district, East Arsi zone, Oromiya. He attended his primary and junior educations at Jinga Dhibu Primary and Junior School and his secondary education at Assela Senior Secondary School. He joined Addis Ababa University in September 1986 and graduated with BSc Degree in Mathematics in July 1989.

From September1990-August 1997, Dr. Jema worked as a teacher in Dilla and Ambo high schools. In September 1998, he joined Addis Ababa University, School of Graduate Studies and obtained MSc degree in Mathematics in July 1999. From August 1999 to date, Dr. Jema has been teaching various undergraduate and graduate courses at Haramaya University and other universities in the country and abroad. He has so far supervised over 200 Master’s and 10 PhD students in Haramaya and other universities. He also worked as an internal and external examiner of over 150 Masters and 10 PhD students of Haramaya and other universities in Ethiopia.His other professional services include active involvement as an anonymous reviewer of over 10 different articles submitted for publication in international journals.

Dr. Jema has held various administrative positions since he joined Haramaya University. Among the positions he held are director of students’ research, associate dean of the faculty of education and head department of mathematics.Additionally, he has been actively participating in various committees of the university. For example, he was a member of staff discipline committee of the university, promotion evaluation committee at the school and college, and master’s and PhD supervisors’ incentive reviewers committee.

Dr. Jema graduated with PhD in Agricultural Economics in April 2008 from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The title of his PhD dissertation is ‘Economic Efficiency and Marketing Performance of Vegetables in Eastern and Central Ethiopia’. He did his PhD under the chairmanship of Professor Hans Andersson and published three articles out of his dissertation all in reputable international journals. He has passed his viva with Excellent Grade.

Dr. Jema’s research expertise and academic interests span across broader issues of marketing, pastoralism versus sedentarization, impact evaluation, food insecurity, climate change and adaptation strategies, adoption and efficiency analyses, inter alia. Overall, these publications therefore play a distinctive role in providing evidence, data and information on various issues of local and global interest.Since 2006, he has published more than 50 articles in reputable international journals and one edited book chapter. He also prepared two teaching materials on Econometrics and Advanced Agricultural Marketing and Price Analysis for MSc students in African universities under Collaborative Masters in Applied Agricultural Economics (CMAAE) program, module for statistics distancediploma students and grade eight mathematics text book in Afan Oromo.

Haramaya University’s Administrative Board awards the rank of full Professorship in Range land Ecology and Bio-diversity to Dr.Tessema Zewdu

Dr. Tessema Zewdu was born on 19 March 1971 at Aykel town, Chilga Woreda of North Gondar administration in Amhara Regional State of Ethiopia. He attended his Primary and Secondary School at Aykel town. After the completion of his HighSchool, he joined the then Alemaya University of Agriculture (currently Haramaya University) in September 1988 and graduated with BSc Degree in Animal Sciences in November 1991. Soon after graduation, he was employed by the Ethiopian Insititute ofAgricultural Researchat Adet Agricultural Research Centerand served as a Researcher and Head of the Animal and Feed Resources Research Programfrom February 1992 to January 2002.

In September 1999, Dr. Tessema has joined the School of Graduate Studies of the Haramaya University and obtained his MSc Degree in Animal Production, focusing on Pasture Management. In February 2003, Dr. Tessema employed by the School of Animal and Range Sciences at the Haramaya University as Lecturer. In November 2007,Dr. Tessema joined the Resource Ecology Group of Wageningen University of the Netherlands to pursue his PhD studies and in October 2011 he received Doctorof Philosophy in the field of Production Ecology and Resource Conservation. He did his PhD research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. H.H.T. Prins and Dr. W.F. de Boerof Wageningen University and examined by Prof. Dr. F.J.J.M. Bongers and Dr. E.M. Veenendaal of Wageningen University, and Prof.Dr.M.G. Rietkerk of Utrecht University of the Netherlands, and Prof. Dr. S. Deckersof the University of Leuvenof Belgium. The title of his PhD dissertation was “Recovery of Rangelands: The Functioning of Soil Seed Banks in a Semi-Arid African Savannas”, that investigates on the mechanisms how changes in grazing management in the form of mobility and access to key grazing areas affects aboveground vegetation dynamics, soil qualities and restoration potentials, as well as the germination ecology of annual and perennial grass species, in a typical semi-arid pastoral and agro-pastoral areas of Ethiopia. He produced six articles out of his PhD dissertation and published in reputable international journals.

From February 2003 to date, Dr. Tessema has been teaching various undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the Haramaya Universityin Rangeland Ecology and Management, Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Services,Environmental Degradation and Restoration Ecology, Feed Resources Characterization and Forage Development,Ecological Methods, Multivariate and Survival Analyses, Experimental Designs and Statistical Analyses, and others.Accordingly, he has been supervising over 50 Masters’ studentsand 7 Doctoral studentsat the Haramaya University in the areas of Animal Production, Animal Feed Resources and Nutrition, Rangeland Ecology and Biodiversity, Natural Resources Management and Enviromental Sciences, Climate Change Adapataion and Mitigation, as well as in other related fields of studies.Moreover, he has been serving as board of examiners during Master theses and Doctral dissertations examination at the Haramaya University and other Universities in Ethiopia.

Dr. Tessema has recieved several competitive research grants from various institutions such as Development Inovation Fund of the World Bank through the Ethiopian Ministry of Eduction, International Foundation for Science in Sweden, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI-African Rising project, ILRI-LIVES project, ILRI-IPMS project and IRLI-SIMLESA proect),GEF and UNDP through the Ethiopian Wildlife Consrvation Authority, Ethiopan Institute of Agricultural Research and Haramaya University. Thus, anumber of research articles are published from these research projects. He has also provided a number of consultancy services to various institutions in Ethiopia, namely, the Horn of Africa Regional Program of Addis Ababa University, Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Reseources, Dire Dawa Administration, and Peace Center for Climate and Social Resielence Project under the College of Law of the Haramaya University that was implemented in Borana Zone of Oromia Regional state of Ethiopia on conflict resolutions as a resoult of key grazing and water resources, as well as on sustainalabe utilization, mangement and conservation of rangeland resesources under the ever changing climate and global warming.

Dr. Tessema has developed over 25 years of experience in teaching, research and community engagement endeavors and involved in various multidisciplinary research activities in different institutions in Ethiopia including the Haramaya University, Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, Amhara Agricultural Research Institute, Oromia Agricultural Research Institute and Somali Pastoral and Agro-pastoral Research Institute.Dr. Tessema’s academic expertise and research interest revolves across broaderissues of ecological studies, focusing on rangeland ecosystems, under the influence of biotic and abiotic factors, animal-plant-soil interactions, feed resourcesavailability, livestock production and soil carbon dynamics, as well as impacts of land degradation and climate change on rangeland ecosystems, livestock production and pastoral livelihoods.As a result of his continued engagement in graduate teaching and research, he has published over 100 publications as author and co-authors, out of which, 60 articles in peer reviewed international journals, 2 books, 12 articles as book chapters, and 28 articles in proceedings of national and international conferences, symposia and workshops.

Dr. Tessema has actively involved and participated in various national and international trainings,workshops, symposia and conferences.

Dr. Tessema has served the Haramaya University in various leadership positions as an Asssocaite Dean of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences between March 2013 and June 2016, and as Head of the School of Animal and Range Sciences between August 2003 and Februray 2007. Moreover, he has been actively particpating in various committees, to mention some, member of the Council of Graduate Studies, Committee member for the revision of the Learning/Teaching Processes of the College of the Continuing and Distance Education, member of the Technical Committee for the Lake Haramaya Watershed Development Project, Committee member for the Recalibration of the Business Process Re-Engineering (BPR) and member of the Management Council of the Haramaya University. In addition, Dr. Tessema has also been worked as a Chairpersonfor the Promotion of Academic Staff of the college, as well as member of the School Council and Graduate Committee of the School of Animal and Range Sciences.

His other professional contributions include active involvement as anonymous reviewer of several articles submitted for publicationsfor more than 20 reputable international journals; to mention some, Animal Feed Science and Technology, Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment, Journal of Environmental Management, Plant Ecology and Diversity, Arid Land Research and Management, Land Degradation and Development, Journal of Vegetation Science, Restoration Ecology, Grass and Forage Science, Journal of Arid Lands, Journal of Forestry Research,Ecosystem Health and Sustainability, Grassland Science, African Journal of Ecology,Biological Invasions, The Rangeland Journal, The International Journal of Forestry Review, Diversity Journal, South African Journal of Animal Sciences, East African Journal of Sciences, East African Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Ethiopian Journal of Animal Production, and others. Last but not least, Dr. Tessema is a member of the Ethiopian Society of Animal Productionsince 1993, and member of the International Society for Development and Sustainability based in Japan, as well as a Technical Editor to the East African Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences that is published by Haramaya University of Ethiopia.

 

Haramaya University Signs Memorandum of Understanding with ERPA

College of Natural and Computational Science and the Ethiopian Radiation Prevention Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a framework of co-operation between the two institutions. The MOU was signed on September 07, 2018 in a ceremony held at the University’s Resource Center.

The objective of this agreement is to indicate sustainable and efficient co-operation on radiation controlling and management options to reduce the risk of radiation around exposed working areas, like laboratories in teaching experiments and hospitals.

In our country’s context, radiation risk is not given that much attention, even if, the risk is there. This agreement helps to create an awareness about the radiation risk and to use it by minimizing the risk, so that, the communities and the laboratory technicians who use radiation active equipments will be safe by creating an awareness about how to prevent radiation hazards.

Dr. Jemal Yousuf, Acting President of the University, and Mr. Solomon Getachew, ERPA General Director signed the MOU.

Dr. Jemal said, “Haramaya University with its long years of experience and having renowned professionals in different disciplines will continue signing various agreements to services community and to create healthy working environment.” He also expressed the University’s commitment to fully discharge its part, because health should be prioritized, so that this MOU shall prove to be by far more than just a document on the shelf.

Mr. Solomon also expressed the authority’s commitment to work together in different activities that are related to radiation control and management issues. The Authority has created strong work relations with many institutions, so that, this agreement signed with Haramaya University is also one of these institutions in Ethiopia.

During the occasion, the two parties indicated that the main goal of the partnership is to establish strong relationship between the two organizations. In addition, the linkage would promote direct co-operation and communication among the institutions related to radiation controlling and management issues.

The ceremony was witnessed by university management members as well as invited guests.

2018/19 Call for Proposals on Women Research Grant (WG) Competition

Haramaya University would like to invite interested female staff with research ideas to compete for the 2018/19 (2011 EC) women research grant. Female staff members are encouraged to submit competitive research ideas that would benefit the community in general and women in particular. While crafting the proposal, activities related to PhD and MSc students can be considered, but a standalone PhD or MSc project is not accepted. Proposals should be developed in line with the Research Thematic Areas of the University, and the research area should be in the Eastern Part of Ethiopia except for compelling reasons.
 Deadline for submission: October 30, 2018
 Submission: Submission should be online via http://grant.haramaya.edu/ Women Research Grant Application (HUWG)
 Team composition: The project PI must be a female and at least 50 % of the other team members should also be females.
