Job Description

The communication officer will be responsible for publicizing, networking, and conveying activities of the ACE project.

 

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develops communication strategies and plans to meet specified communication objectives of the Center.
  • Organizes meetings, workshops, and forums of the ACE project
  • Drafts, compiles, documents, and disseminates specific knowledge and information, key experiences and critical lessons on ACE activities and implementation
  • Compiles and publishes information bulletins, magazines, etc of the ACE
  • Promotes Centre’s programs and activities
  • Follows up on partnership activities, collaborations and networking, and reports progress
  • Contributes to the ACE website and social media channels through writings articles, documentary video, and audiovisual productions, maintaining and updating photo galleries
  • Develops and maintains contact with the media, press and journalists, produces press releases and develops and manages media contact lists
  • Writes publicity articles for the local and international media in Amharic and English languages on and ACE activities and achievements to the general public through different media
  • Prepares and manages the publication and dissemination of project training and extension materials in consultation with project team members.
  • Assists the project in media, communication and dissemination of output
  • Maintains the project’s website, bimonthly newsletters and press releases
  • Prepares photographic records of events, project videos, and documents project activities
  • Liaises with project partners and stakeholders on sharing audio-visual and printed communication materials;
  • Liaises with journalists to disseminate project information, news, and outputs through different media
  • Acts as an ambassador to the project, its partners, and beneficiaries
  • Continually evaluates the success of communication strategy/internal and external communications
  • Performs any other similar and related duties

 Required Qualifications and Work Experience

  • A minimum of Master’s degree in communication, agricultural information and communication management, Journalism, or other relevant disciplines with at least two-year experience in written, oral, and online communications

Preferred Specific Experiences

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and facilitate conferences, workshops, meetings, seminars, etc.
  • Experience in proper handling of university property and communication with national and international students and staff
  • A thorough knowledge of the working environment in Ethiopian universities is a plus
  • Qualified women are particularly encouraged to apply

 Required Skills

  • Extensive knowledge and conceptual understanding of the job of a communications officer, to take care of specialized technical as well as administrative functions of the job, e.g. knowledge of relevant policies and procedures to be able to determine an appropriate course of action based on these guidelines with ability to analyze, interpret and modify complicated information
  • High level of computer skills such as website management, web publication, communication, document formatting, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Ability to work with a diverse population of faculty, staff, partners and stakeholders

Salary and Benefits

Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance network (CHAMPS)

The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance network (CHAMPS, http://champshealth.org/) is a new global health surveillance network funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed at understanding the causes of child death in developing countries, particularly sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The Emory Global Health Institute, which houses the U.S. office of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI), is the lead partner in the network and has worked with the London School of Hygiene to develop the collaboration with Haramaya University.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Haramaya University Laboratory Opened for COVID-19 Tests

CHAMPS-Ethiopia Program’s laboratory with a maximum capacity of running 4000 COVID-19 tests per day is now open for operation. The laboratory is expected to give services to communities in the Eastern part of Ethiopia.

According to Dr Nega Assefa, Principal Investigator (PI) of CHAMPS-Ethiopia program, the laboratory at the College of Health and Medical Sciences, Harar Campus, was established to collect and process samples to identify causes of death in children under-five years in Harar and Kersa areas.

Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) gave training to the laboratory technicians, reviewed the capacity, tested the readiness of the laboratory and has given its approval for operation. Though it is difficult to use the maximum capacity of the laboratory now, it has the capacity of testing 4000 COVID-19 samples per day.

Mr. Ordin Bedri, honorable guest and President of Harari Region, acknowledged the role the University has taken in the control and prevention of the pandemic and said the start of testing in the region will contribute to the prevention of the disease and promised the region’s support to the University.

Dr. Jemal Yousuf, University President, appreciated all the work done by the University staff benefiting the surrounding community and expressed his hope that the laboratories would contribute since testing is one of the basic mechanisms which helps to control the spread of this pandemic.

Mr. Abdulkadir Gelgelo, Deputy Head of Oromia Regional Health Bureau, expressed his gratitude for all the work the University did and assured the region will be supporting the University in its efforts.

Haramaya University has been contributing to the control and prevention of the pandemic in the surrounding community in various ways. So far, the Haramaya University has designed and produced sample facemasks, produced and distributed hand-sanitizer, and distributed COVID-19 prevention communication materials in different formats. The University staff have also been working to support nearby communities using their professional knowledge.

Haramaya University has provided food support to needy families

As part of its humanitarian effort to the COVID-19 response, Haramaya University provided food support to 378 needy families worth more than 935,000 (nine hundred twenty thousand) birr.

A two-month food and cleaning supplies was distributed to family heads that are unable to do their jobs because of the limited movement implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19.

During the ceremony, University President, Dr. Jamal Yousuf said, “Haramaya University has been working to reduce and prevent the spread of the virus in the community since the first case was confirmed in the country. The food support, today, is part of the humanitarian effort to alleviate the problem of the local families in need who have been affected by the current crisis.”

According to Prof. Mengistu Urege, Academic Vice-president of the University and COVID-19 Task Force Logistic Team Coordinator, the University distributed “40kg maize, 20kg sorghum, 15kg teff, 15kg haricot bean, 25kg macaroni, 5kg rice, 5kg oat, 4kg soya bean, 3 liter edible oil, 200ml sanitizer, and two soap bars to each family; the support given to one family cost Birr 3870 (three thousand eight hundred and seventy-seven), with the total support for the households cost Birr 688,860.00 (six hundred eighty-eight thousand eight hundred and sixty)”.

Mayor of Haramaya Town, Mr. Jaffer Yusuf, urged the public to take precautionary measures as the virus poses a serious threat to the public and the country. He thanked the University for its support to those affected by the virus and said they would work with different organizations to reach out to those in need to prevent the problem from escalating.

The University also donated food supplies worth Birr 246,548.00 (two hundred forty-six thousand five hundred forty-eight) to 200 households in need in Gurawa Town, East Hararghe Zone.

Haramaya University has formed a research collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Current research projects are focused on maternal and child health. The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance network (CHAMPS, http://champshealth.org/) is a new global health surveillance network funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed at understanding the causes of child death in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The core of the project is to develop laboratory, epidemiological and clinical surveillance for detection of infectious diseases in children who have died (through minimally invasive tissue sampling) and those with life-threatening illnesses. The Maternal Infection Study, an aligned research project, is investigating the contribution of infection to stillbirth and early neonatal death.

The post-holder will be responsible for working with health care workers and research staff to support and facilitate all research activities within the Paediatric and Maternity department. The post-holder will also be expected to support and contribute to community based CHAMPS activities as required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The post-holder will work as part of the team to support initiation of clinical surveillance and smooth running of clinical research activities, and will work under the guidance of the principle investigators and, where appropriate, delegated line manager.

They will be responsible for overseeing changes in clinical practice to support clinical care and surveillance (improving documentation and supporting clinical investigations). They will be responsible for recruitment of participants for CHAMPS and the maternal infection study, study sampling, ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory policies in the provision of medical care and execution of the research studies currently ongoing and those which are subsequently implemented. The post-holder will also be responsible for liaising with community health centers and planning and delivering community based health education sessions as part of the community engagement program.

Responsibilities

·         Involvement in writing of study protocols and database creation

·         Day to day oversight of study activities, including recruitment of participants, staff allocation and planning

·         Participation in MITS process including performance of MITS for eligible cases

·         Coordination of family follow up after MITS together with the research team

·         Involvement in community liaison and sensitization, and working with the social science team

·         Liaison with community health centers. Planning and delivering of health education sessions as part of the community engagement program

·         Liaison with other medical and nursing staff where clinical surveillance and research on maternal and child health is being done.

·         Ensuring compliance with good clinical practice, research guidelines and regulations

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for all the Quality Assurance aspects of the Hararghe Health Research laboratories (HHR) in Harar. S/he will work closely with the laboratory staff, data analysts and field workers and will work as part of the HHR Laboratory team under the Laboratory Director. His/her functions will be, but not be limited to the following;

 Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

  1. Oversee a quality control program appropriate for tests performed in the HHR Laboratories.
  2. Implement improvements to laboratory testing procedures to improve efficiency, resource utilization, decrease turnaround time, etc., utilizing new and established laboratory policies and procedures.
  3. Develop, perform, and manage an audit program that encompasses all phases of laboratory practices and field sample collection and provide assurance that, documentation, and record-keeping requirements are met.
  4. Perform scheduled and unscheduled checks on bench scientists, Technologists and Technicians.
  5. Administer the proficiency testing and External Quality Assurance schemes.
  6. Maintain current and accurate records of all relevant communications, audits, corrective action plans, and effectiveness monitoring.
  7. Maintain current and accurate records of all personnel qualifications, certifications and contact information.
  8. Review, track and communicate information regarding process variations and quality control samples as required by laboratory quality assurance procedures.
  9. Check validation systems for all pieces of equipment to ensure maximal function (service schedules, daily panel runs, etc.)
  10. Ensure daily maintenance charts are well documented.
  11. Perform/supervise training and it’s documentation for lab staff.
  12. Review and maintain all laboratory SOPs
  13. Review test results and reports for accuracy, completeness and compliance to requirements to ensure that quality assurance standards and regulatory requirements are met.
  14. Maintain familiarity with laboratory procedures in order to effectively perform laboratory quality assurance functions.
  15. Liaise with the other CHAMPS groups in developing and implementing HHR QA GCP/GLP objectives
  16. Train staff on quality control/assurance issues.

Haramaya University has provided food support to needy families

As part of its humanitarian effort to the COVID-19 response, Haramaya University provided food support to 378 needy families worth more than 935,000 (nine hundred twenty thousand) birr.

A two-month food and cleaning supplies was distributed to family heads that are unable to do their jobs because of the limited movement implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19.

During the ceremony, University President, Dr. Jamal Yousuf said, “Haramaya University has been working to reduce and prevent the spread of the virus in the community since the first case was confirmed in the country. The food support, today, is part of the humanitarian effort to alleviate the problem of the local families in need who have been affected by the current crisis.”

According to Prof. Mengistu Urege, Academic Vice-president of the University and COVID-19 Task Force Logistic Team Coordinator, the University distributed “40kg maize, 20kg sorghum, 15kg teff, 15kg haricot bean, 25kg macaroni, 5kg rice, 5kg oat, 4kg soya bean, 3 liter edible oil, 200ml sanitizer, and two soap bars to each family; the support given to one family cost Birr 3870 (three thousand eight hundred and seventy-seven), with the total support for the households cost Birr 688,860.00 (six hundred eighty-eight thousand eight hundred and sixty)”.

Mayor of Haramaya Town, Mr. Jaffer Yusuf, urged the public to take precautionary measures as the virus poses a serious threat to the public and the country. He thanked the University for its support to those affected by the virus and said they would work with different organizations to reach out to those in need to prevent the problem from escalating.

The University also donated food supplies worth Birr 246,548.00 (two hundred forty-six thousand five hundred forty-eight) to 200 households in need in Gurawa Town, East Hararghe Zone.

Haramaya University Confers the Rank of Professorship

Haramaya University’s Administrative Board Awards the Rank of Full Professorship in Biomedical Sciences, Food Safety and Zoonosis to Dr. Adem Hiko.

Dr. Adem Hiko Woshie was born on 16 June, 1978 at Goonosa Burkitu Kebele in Gedeb Assasa District, West Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State. He attended his primary education at Goonos Burkitu Primary School, Junior School at Kore Junior School, Senior Secondary School at Assasa Senior Secondary School and High School Educations at Kofale High School. He joined Addis Ababa University in November 1993 and graduated with Diploma in Animal Health Assistant in 1995. After serving Oromia Regional State Agriculture Bureau for three years, he joined Addis Ababa University as an advanced standing student and graduated with Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in July 2005. In Novomber 2005, he joined Addis Ababa University, School of Graduate Studies and earned MSc degree in Tropical Veterinary Public Health in August 2007. After serving Haramaya University for three years, Dr Adem Hiko joined Free University of Berlin in Germany for PhD study. Thus, from April 2011 to April 2014 he attended course work and publications based PhD study in Biomedical Sciences at Dahlem Research School. At the same time, Dr. Adem Hiko attended Desertion based PhD study in Biomedical Sciences at Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and earned his PhD in September 2017. The title of his PhD dissertation is ‘Zoonotic and Spoilage Bacteria in a Meat Production and Processing Line in Ethiopia’. He published four (4) articles out of his dissertation in reputable international journals.

 

In 2017 Dr. Adem Hiko attended Training Course on “Food Processing and Packaging Technology (Meat, Dairy Product, Honey, etc) for Ethiopia, 2017” in Changsha, Hunan, The People’s Republics of China. He also received Faculty Exchange Program in 2019 for 3 and half months at Michigan State University, USA.

 

Dr. Adem Hiko worked for Haramaya University as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in teaching, research, community and outreach services for over 10 effective years. This provided him the opportunity to enhance his academic career. During this period, he has been teaching various 8 undergraduate and 6 postgraduate courses in the area of his expertise.

 

Dr. Adem Hiko has so far supervised 16 MSc and more than 20 DVM students to successful completion of their Thesis. He also served as an external examiner to Masters and DVM students as well as curriculum reviewer of other universities in Ethiopia. Dr. Adem’s research expertise and academic interests span across broader issues of Veterinary Public Health, mainly focusing on Zoonosis, Food processing and safety, Antimicrobial resistance, and Climate change and animal health risk. Since 2008 to date, he has published 42 articles in reputable international and national journals, one book chapter, one abstracts, two proceedings, and three conference papers. His other professional services include active involvement as an editorial board of various Journals and anonymous reviewer of many articles submitted for publication in national and international journals.

 

Dr. Adem Hiko has held various administrative positions during his tenure at Haramaya University. Among the positions he held are Research Coordinator at College of Veterinary Medicine, Editorial Manager of East African Journal of  Sciences, and Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, he has been actively participating in various committees including Animal Ethic Committee, Appointment, Promotion, Scholarship and Recruitment Committee member in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Haramaya University.  Dr. Adem also actively involved in various community services. Some of them are providing Training on ‘Dairy Processing and Safety‘ to Agro-pastoralist, Milk traders and Livestock Expertise; Training on ‘Food Sefety, Meat Haygiene and the Processing Technolohy‘ to professionals and Food Handlers, as well as control/ regulator of Livestock and Zoonotic Diseases.

 

Dr. Adem Hiko expressed his happiness for earning the rank of full Professor and wholeheartedly thanked his students, co-workers and friends, Haramaya University management who served at various times, and his family for the unreserved support and encouragement he has received in the endeavor to reach to this high rank of academic title.

በመሆኑም ፕሮግራሙን በተቀናጀና በተደራጀ መልኩ በሚፈለገውና በሚጠበቀው ደረጃ ለማሳካት የክልሉ መንግስት አስፈላጊውን ድጋፍ ከማድረግ ባሻገር በባለቤትነትና በኃላፊነት እንሚሰራ አረጋግጠዋል።

 

ርዕሰ መስተዳድሩ በወቅቱ እንዳሉት በሀገር አቀፍ ደረጃ ከተመረጡ አምስት የድንገተኛና ጽኑ ህሙማን እንክብካቤና ማሻሻያ አገልግሎት መስጫ ፕሮግራሞች መካከል የሐረሩ አንዱ ነው።

የድንገተኛና ፅኑ ህሙማን ህክምና አገልግሎት ከዚህ ቀደም ትኩረት ያልተሰጠውና ክፍተት የነበረበት መሆኑን ጠቁመው በአሁኑ ወቅት ግን ለህብረተሰቡ ተደራሽ ለማድረግ በትኩረት እየተሰራ መሆኑን አቶ ኦርዲን ተናግረዋል።

ሆስፒታሎችና ሌሎች ጤና ተቋማት በአገልግሎቱ አሰጣጥ የሚታዩ ክፍተቶችን በቴክኖሎጂ፣ ሰው ኃይል እና ግብአት የማጠናከር ስራ ይከናወናል፤ የክልሉ መንግስትም አስፈላጊውን ድጋፍ ያደርጋል ብለዋል።

 

የሐረማያ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በሐረር ህይወት ፋና ስፔሻላይዝድ ቲቺንግ ሆስፒታል ውስጥ ከ1000 በላይ የህሙማን አልጋ የሚኖረው ዘመናዊ የህክምና ማዕከል ግንባታን እያጠናቀቀ መሆኑ ለምስራቅ ኢትዮዽያ የተሻለ የህክምና አገልግሎት እንዲያገኙ ከማስቻሉ ባሻገር ሐረርን የህክምና ቱሪዝም ማዕከል እንደሚያደርጋት አቶ ኦርዲን ተናግረዋል።

በሐረማያ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የጤናና ህክምና ሳይንስ ኮሌጅ ቺፍ ኤግዚኪዩቲቭ ዳይሬክተር ዶክተር ያደታ ደሴ በበኩላቸው ድንገተኛ አደጋዎች በተሸከርካሪ ፣ እሳት ፣ ግጭትና በሌሎችም ሰው ሰራሽና ተፈጥሮ ችግሮች የሚከሰቱ መሆናቸውን ተናግረዋል።

በዚህ ምክንያት ችግሮቹ ሲከሰቱ ፕሮግራሙ በምስራቁ የሀገሪቱ ክፍል ለሚገኝ ህዝብ በህይወት ፋና ሆስፒታል አገልግሎቱን ለመስጠት ስራውን በይፋ መጀመሩን አስታውቀዋል።

ምስራቅ ሐረርጌ የተሸከርካሪ አደጋ የሚበዛበት ዞን መሆኑን የገለጹት ደግሞ የዞኑ ጤና ጥበቃ ጽህፈት ቤት ምክትል ኃላፊ አቶ አብዱላዚዝ አብዱረሃማን በበኩላቸው የፕሮግራሙ መጀመር ያለውን ሀብት አሥተባብሮ በመጠቀም በአደጋ ጉዳት የሚደርስባቸውን ሰዎች ለመታደግ ጠቀሜታው የጎላ ይሆናል ብለዋል።

 

በፕሮግራሙ ማጠቃለያ ላይ የሐረማያ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የአስተዳደርና ተማሪዎች ጉዳይ ምክትል ፕሬዝዳንት ፕሮፌሰር ጄይላን ወሊዪ ባደረጉት ንግግር ህንፃን ልጅን ማሳደግና ተቋም የመገንባት ሥራ ጥንቃቄንና የብዙ አካላት ርብርብ የሚጠይቅ በመሆኑ በዩኒቨርሲቲያችን የሚቋቋመው የድንገተኛና ፅኑ ህክምና መስጫ ማዕከል ውጤታማ እንዲሆን ዩኒቨርሲቲያችን ከፍተኛ ጥረት የሚያድረግ በመሆኑ ባለሙያዎችና ባለድርሻ አካላትም የበኩላቸውን ኃላፊነት በቁርጠኝነት እንዲወጡ ጥሪ አቅርበዋል።

 

ሐረማያ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በተለያዩ ዘርፎች በምሥራቅ ኢትዮጵያ የሚኖሩ ሰዎችን ችግሮች በመፍታት ተጠቃሚ እያደረገ መሆኑን ፕሮፌሰር ጄይላን ጠቁመው በጤናው ዘርፍ የተሻለ አገልግሎት ለህዝቡ ለማድረስ በዩኒቨርሲቲው ታሪክ ከፍተኛ በጀት የጠየቀውን የሆስፒታል ግንባታ እያጠናቀቁ እንደሆነና ትናንት ይፋ የተደረገውም ፕሮግራም በተለያዩ ድንገተኛ አደጋዎች ምክንያት ድጋፍ የሚያስፈልጋቸው ዜጎችን ህይወት ለመታደግ ያሥችላል ማለታቸው የሐ.ዩ. ማህበረሰብ ሬዲዮ ኤፍ ኤም 91.5 ባልደረባ ዘግቧል።

Major City Emergency and Critical Care Improvement Program (HARAR ME-CCARE) Launched

Haramaya University in collaboration with the FDRE Ministry of Health (FMOH); Harari Regional State and concerned stakeholders launched an Improving City Wide Medical Emergency and Critical Care Services on 21 October 2020 in Harar City.

According to College of Health and Medical Sciences chief executive director, Dr. Yadeta Dessie the main objective of lunching Improving City Wide Medical Emergency and Critical Care Services is to establish standardized collaboration, coordination and communication system among stakeholders for better medical emergency and critical care services provision; to identify support packages and implementation mechanisms for better medical emergency and critical care services provision and to develop monitoring and accountability framework with its implementation mechanisms for the different stakeholders.

Dr. Yadeta added that Haramaya University in collaboration with the concerned stakeholders in Establishing and strengthening city based communication and coordination platform is working hard to take the nation’s health care services to the next level through human resource training and health care infrastructure.

The launching workshop was officially opened with a welcoming speech by His Excellency, Mr. Mr. Odrin Bedri, Harari Regional State Vice President and in his speech he addressed the impotency of lunching Improving City Wide Medical Emergency and Improving the accessibility and quality of emergency and Critical Care Service is essential and he promised to support and strengthening its Endeavour and will continue playing role to its level best with manner by collaborating with the necessary stakeholders.

On the behalf of Haramaya University, Prof. Jeylan Wolye, Delegated President and Vice-president for Administration and Students Affairs in his closing speech conveyed his best wishes to Launching an Improving City Wide Medical Emergency and Critical Care Service.

He added, “Hospitals and Health Stations with strong public health emergency preparedness and critical care responses play critical role in minimizing patients` chance of dying from critical but reversible diseases.”

During the dissection, many relevant questions were raised and the concerned body gave their feedback. Fainally the participants have agreed that to support this new baby program.

Department of Economics conducted internal Curriculum Review

Haramaya University department of Economics in college of Business and Economics has conducted an Internal Curriculum Review at the University’s Resource Center on November 5, 2020, to establish MSc program in “Development Economics”.

In the workshop opening ceremony, Mr. Henok Semaw, Dean of Business and Economics College, said that the curriculum review workshop plays a significant role for the enrichment of the curriculum draft. The program is designed to realize the broader objective of producing competent academicians, researchers, practitioners and policy makers in development economics. “Development Economic focuses on the fundamental force of economic growth and transformation. The relevance of this program is to make development policy and practice remain undiminished by a greater recognition of market forces and free international trade to maximize social welfare. According to our college in postgraduate program, this Master of Development Economics is going to be the third program next to Master of Business administration (MBA) and Master of Energy Economy, in a near future another Master level programs will be lunched” added Mr. Henok Semaw.

Dr. Feyera Densa, Director of post graduate program directorate, in his turn, said “As we all know our University has been selected to act as Research centered University, so after assessing the need in the country level; lunching such a post graduate program is very essential and it is timely. This internal curriculum review workshop is very important to lead this draft Development Economics Curriculum for further external review process. When the curriculum is approved and launched, it helps to produce literate human power in the field of Development Economics in our locality and in a country level.”

The participants of the workshop and the internal reviewers forwarded their appreciations, suggestions and constructive comments to the stage and then the discussion was made based on the comments raised from the participants and reviewers.

Lastly, Professor Mengistu Urge, Vice president for Academic affairs, in the workshop closing ceremony, said that such internal curriculum review workshop is important to improve the ongoing curriculum and to look over again considering the raised comments and suggestions. Professor Mengistu also said that the developers of this curriculum should be appreciated.“In the next five Years, our University will become one of the research Universities in the county,so opening such a postgraduate program is very important because it could foster the process to be a research University. For that reason, we encourage lunching such a postgraduate programs if the need assessment is conducted correctly and the result indicates necessity” added professor Mengistu.

As indicated in the drafted curriculum document, the overall objective of the program is to teach students in the field of Development Economics and enable them to conduct rigorous problem solving research. After successful completion of the program graduates are expected to contribute to the advancement of the country’s economy.
