College of Social Sciences and Humanities in collaboration with the Unit for Peace and Conflict Studies in the University of Innsbruck, Austria conducted a national workshop to establish the Institute of Peace and Development Studies (IPDS) and to review the newly revised PhD Curriculum in Peace and Development Studies. The workshop was held on November 12, 2020 at Haramaya University’s Resource Center.

In his welcoming speech, Dr. Feyera Dinsa, Director for Postgraduate Programs Directorate, appreciated the College’s initiative to revise the conventional curriculum that does not require international standards such as degree comparability and compatibility, curriculum flexibility, and student mobility.

He stressed that the revised curriculum is exemplary for other programs as the higher education policy of the country stipulates the necessity to shift from the conventional curriculum design and implementation to the competency-based modular approach and European Credit Accumulation and Transfer System (ECTS).

According to Dr. Adinew Tadesse, Dean of the College, the proposal for the establishment of the Institute and the revised curriculum were developed during the experience sharing exchange between staff members of the two universities, partnering in the project titled HU-UIBK Partnership for Strengthening Institutional Capacity in Peace building and Conflict Transformation.

“The college has been implementing the joint project since 2017 and the workshop is organized to review and enrich the proposals with feedbacks from professionals and stakeholders,” stated Dr. Adinew.

Prof. Mengistu Urge, Vice-president for Academic Affairs, said the initiative to establish the institute contributes to the effort of the University to create a peaceful and vibrant society through research, teaching, training, consultancy, and community engagement.

“HU is embedded in the pastoralist communities of Eastern Ethiopia where conflict is rampant between different groups because of social, economic, political, and environmental conditions. Hence, establishing an Institute that explicitly focuses on the interrelationship between peace and development is timely and in line with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s(MoSHE’s) current differentiation of Haramaya University among research and postgraduate program offering universities in the country,” noted Prof. Mengistu.

The workshop was attended by distinguished guests from Austria and the academic community of HU. Comments and suggestions were forwarded from the reviewers and the participants.

Mr. Adham Hamid, the Partnership Project Coordinator from the Austrian Partners, made a closing speech emphasizing the importance of the workshop and he expressed his appreciation for the project team for their commitment and dedication to achieve the project goals.

Haramaya University launched Agricultural and Rural Innovation Incubation Hub (ARIHUB) and trained its first intake of trainees on Entrepreneurship and Agribusiness Development at Haramaya University (ARIHUB) for 30 Local Youths from December 20-23, 2020 at Rare Training Center.

During the opening ceremony of the training, Dr. Zelalem Bekeko, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, explain the importance of training and incubation centers to build local capacities and innovation and promote agricultural commercialization. He added that such initiatives not only will enhance the innovation and entrepreneurial capacities of students and local youth groups but also improve farmers’ livelihood through demand-driven technology development and incubation.

According to Dr.Getachew Shambel, the organizer of the training and principal investigator and coordinator for student and local youth training at ARIHUB, building local capacities and innovation is a core pillar of agricultural transformation and promoting empowerment and a key responsibility of research universities such as Haramaya University are tasked with.

Dr. Getachew added that the ARIHUB model of entrepreneurship is the first of its kind at Haramaya University. The ARIHUB will serve as a laboratory to experiment and incubate innovation, business ideas, and agricultural technologies by students, local youth groups, and researchers.

It was highlighted that the ARIHUB is not the same as the conventional entrepreneurship model. Unlike conventional entrepreneurship training, the ARIHUB model at HU integrates entrepreneurship training with innovation incubation and Multi-stakeholder Innovation Platforms (MSIPs). The use of MSIPs in the AIH is to promote co-learning, mentorship, identify emerging needs and relevant technologies to address expressed need of the local people and other stakeholders, and provide opportunities to tap into existing strong business networks.

The innovation incubation facilitated by the MSIPs will allow trainees to experiment with potential business ideas at the innovation incubation hub. Trainees who passed the first stage of the entrepreneurship training will be invited to participate in an open call for a small seed grant. Trainees that passed the first and second stage and admitted to the Center will be given the opportunity to work with subject matter expert mentors/supervisors who will regularly coach and monitor their progress, according to information obtained. They will also receive coaching from multiple stakeholders and partners, participate in specialized /tailor-made training to execute their business plan, and receive soft skills and personal mastery training.

The project is coordinated by Dr. Getachew Shambel and colleagues from the School of Rural Development and Agricultural Innovations (RDAI)) with support from RUFORUM, MASTERCARD foundation, and Haramaya University. The coordinator emphasized that the ARIHUB initiatives and the youth training could not have been realized without the support and encouragement of Dr. Jemal Yousuf, President of Haramaya University from early inception to realization of the initiative. He also thanked the research office for its unwavering support to the center.

The project is designed to enhance agricultural students and local youth groups’ entrepreneurial competencies and innovativeness through strengthening and supporting the development of innovative agricultural enterprises. It is mentioned that the ARIHUB particularly aims at supporting selected students in the College of Agriculture and other schools of Haramaya University and targeted local youth groups to design, develop, and implement their innovative agri-business ideas through successive training, interactive coaching, mentoring, and monitoring activities provided at the innovation incubation hub.  The final output is to promote innovativeness, self-employment, and build positive entrepreneurial skills and attitude.

The three day training titled “Entrepreneurship and Business Development for Local Youth groups” is part of the commitment to enhance innovation and the entrepreneurial capacity of local youth through a step-by-step approach to developing a business idea and its successful implementation. The first round of training was organized for a total of 30 local youths who are carefully selected based on key indicators. Of the total participants, more than 75% of them were female youth.  During the training, participants were enabled to develop a real business plan and a personal action plan. It is said that the business plan will allow the trainees to apply for a small seed money competition (which will be shortly announced by the Center) to experiment with their business ideas at ARIHUB.

The three-day training came to an end through a certificate award and motivational speech by Professor Jeylan Woliye, Vice president for Administration and Student Affairs. Professor Jeylan addressed the trainees on the importance of knowledge and entrepreneurship to tackling the growing youth unemployment in the region. He encouraged the participants to clearly set their goals and to put lessons gained during the training to practice.

The Haramaya university BENEFIT-REALISE cluster conducted a two days review workshop from February 3-4, 2021 at Harar, Wonderland Hotel.

It was disclosed that the objectives of the meeting were presenting the major achievements of the project in the last three years under the four pathways, and to discuss with stakeholders on how to embed the lessons learnt and obtained results or validated best fit practices within the government regular extension program.

According to Dr. Bulti Tesso, Manager of REALISE Cluster and Assistant Professor at Haramaya University, “Realizing Agricultural Livelihood Sustainability in Ethiopia (REALISE)” is a three-year (2018-2020) project implemented with financial support of the Dutch government. The program was initiated with the goal of “enhanced human, organizational and institutional capacities to adapt, validate, and scale best fit practices to improve the resilience of chronically food insecure households in PSNP woredas”. The project, according to the officials, has envisaged achieving this goal through four primary outcomes which include: developed best fit practices that have the potential to contribute to increased productivity and resilience; increased availability, timely delivery and use of quality seeds; enhanced human, organizational and institutional capacities, and conducive environment for institutionalization of evidence-based system innovations.

Dr. Bulti added that the project targeted 36 PSNP kebeles of nine woredas (Haramaya, Kombolcha, Gurawa, Kersa, Meta, Jarso, Deder, Fedis and Bedeno) in East Hararghe zone.

In the last two years, the BENEFIT-REALISE project has validated and pre-scaled a total of 28 best fit practices (BFPs) and created access to these practices for 22,550 farmers, he added.

In addition, a total of 33,046 farmers have directly and indirectly accessed quality seeds. Moreover, the project has created four linkages among stakeholders in relation to seed production and supply, and trained about 85 extension and research staffs on validation, demonstration, and scaling of agricultural technologies as well as on seed production and management.

According to the information obtained from the project, the REALISE Program has been implementing various interventions under the four pathways.  The interventions were identified based on the findings of the participatory rural appraisal (PRA) conducted during the project commencement in 2018.

During the opening of the workshop, Dr. Tesfaye Lemma, Vice- President for Research Affairs of Haramaya University, explained the goal of the REALISE Program and the objectives of the implemented activities as well as the purpose of the workshop.

He appreciated the efforts of the participants of the workshop and the farmers and stakeholders in adopting and using the best innovative practices of agricultural production to realize agricultural livelihood security in the country.

On the workshop, 63 participants from woreda and zonal agriculture offices, cooperatives and unions, non-governmental organizations, community representatives, and Haramaya University had participated. During the workshop, the major achievements of REALISE project under the different pathways, the experiences of BENEFIT-ISSD and Afran Qallo farmers’ cooperative union on seed related issues were presented and discussed.

At the end of the workshop, a general discussion was conducted to create common understanding on the need for institutional embedding of REALISE’s results and approaches within the government regular extension program and to share responsibilities among stakeholders for its implementation.

The East Hararghe Zone Bureau of Agriculture & Natural Resources (BoANR) and representatives of the nine woredas have agreed to take up and institutionalize the REALISE results and approaches within their own extension programs and to start incorporating the implementation in their annual plans.

Other stakeholders including Haramaya University Research & Extension Office, Fedis Agricultural Research Center,

Afran Qallo farmers’ cooperative union, through their representatives, have also agreed to contribute their share to ensure the sustainability of the REALISE interventions; especially through multiplication of seeds for the selected crop varieties and providing technical and professional support.

Finally, it was agreed to establish a platform coordinated by the Zone Agriculture & Natural Resources (BoANR), and to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) among these stakeholders to realize the agreements reached during the general discussion of this workshop.

Haramaya University Research Office Conducted Research Output Promotion in West and East Harerghe Zone Chiro and Harar Town, on February18/2021, and February 22/2021 respectively.

Haramaya University Agricultural Research Office has promoted a new type of Potato called orange Potato which is rich in multivitamins. The office conducted the promotion in Chiro Town by selecting Market-day and public areas to create awareness about the food preparation from it. It was expressed that this orange potato safeguards humans’ food security for the urban people and the people in dry-land areas, especially for pregnant women and children above six months. It was also said that it couldprevent malnutrition related diseases. Moreover, the farmers generate additional income from selling extra orange Potato yields.

Dr. Dendena Gelmesa, instructor, researcher, and focal person of the DDBIO (Development and Delivery of Bio-fortified Crops at Scale) project in Haramaya University, says that the project works with internationally established organization known as CIP (International Potato Center) which is working in medium level research on agriculture, especially on Potato variety. The project is working on farmers’ land with four Woredas in East Hararghe and four Woredas in West Harerghe zones selected based on their weather conditions. It is known that East and West Harerghe take the second position in potato production in Ethiopia, but orange potato is different.

As Dr. Dendena, the variety which the University is working on very important for the areas known in their shortage of rain, water, and food like East and West Haraghe zone.

Mr. Husen Ame, Agricultural Development Officer and focal person for CIP projecting West Harerghe zone, in his part, says “We have selected four Weredas in our zone to give training for the farmers and agricultural extension officers by Haramaya University researchers about the orange potato importance and the cultivation process. By working with the union called burqa-gale, we have recently disseminated the seeds for many farmers in our four Woredas for the first round.”

“By discussing with Haramaya University, we have agreed to expand orange Potato crop to our other more Woredas as we understood its multiple importance and the needs of the farmers to crop it is increasing. Therefore, wonderfully promoting orange Potato importance helps to change wrongly cultured attitude in urban people and it will increase the demand for it. For the future also, we want to strengthen the connection that we have with Haramaya University and we would like to present grateful thanks,” added Mr. Husen.

During the promotion, the people who tested different food items made up of orange Potato said that they misunderstood about using Potato for such food items. They also added that they considered Potato as a poor people food only and they will include it in their food items if it is available in the market. Helen Zewde, Sheka Mohamed Aliye, Fetiya Sebiral, Fatuma Mutigni, Ahmed Mehamed, Teshome H/Michael and others, who live in Chiro and Harar Town and surrounding rural areas, in their turn, thanked Haramaya University for creating such awareness by going to their area.

In other way, the information from CIP officials indicates that, in similar way the Promotion will continue to Diredawa and other Towns.
